CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Rachael read and re-read Craig’s text message as she took the lift to the eighth floor. He’d been sidetracked. Elias Hamill, Jason’s father, had turned himself in to local police. Her foremost question was why. Yes, Lochie had handed in the video showing Elias beating Brent Wilkinson to death, but why not just disappear? Craig was on his way to collect and question him. She would have liked to have been in that interview room, but this morning’s incident had taken up half the day and she had her own work to do.

She strode through the meeting room door and found Cass and Linc waiting. ‘Morning,’ she said. ‘Anything new?’

‘Yep,’ Cass said. ‘We brought Carole back in as you asked and questioned her. Apparently she panicked after learning about the scaffolding. She was terrified that on top of losing her husband she’d lose the business. She was full of tears and remorse. Said she didn’t think she could handle anything else. We told her she’d committed an offence by attempting to hinder the investigation but I wanted to leave it to you as to whether we charge her or not.’

Rachael shook her head. ‘Nothing was destroyed and I want to try and keep her onside—for now. Let her think she’s safe while we figure out what’s really going on.’

Cass nodded. ‘Also, I got hold of Latimer’s and Bradley’s phone records. I haven’t found anything of interest as yet. I also searched their social media. Neither Latimer nor Bradley are particularly active on social media so there’s nothing but Kirsten’s social posts have been full of depressing memes of late about relationship problems and self-help quotes, that sort of thing.’

‘Okay. It was worth a shot. Linc?’

‘Yeah, first up, how’s Lexi doing?’ he asked with a pointed glare at Cass.

‘Last I heard from her she was fine.’

‘She’s been attacked twice in less than a week. Been immersed in water with a dead body. She’s fine?’

‘It’s her favourite word. Finn’s taken her to the hospital to get a gash in her arm checked out.’

Linc grinned. ‘He got to play hero.’

‘I’m glad he was there. We were so far away when she went in the water. Then she didn’t come back up.’ She grimaced. ‘He moved fast, thank God.’

‘If you get a chance, pass on my best wishes.’

‘Will do.’

‘It’s great she’s okay,’ Cass said. ‘I might not agree she should be here but I wouldn’t want anything to happen to her.’

‘Big of you,’ Linc said.

‘Don’t start, you two. Linc, CCTV?’

‘Okay, so I’ve found footage showing Bradley getting off at Warnervale Station at 3:30am. No Kirsten but we now know why.’

‘Okay. Let’s move on to Rico,’ she said, going to the other board. ‘So as you know, this morning’s operation that should have led to the arrests of the twins was interrupted when Aden Hamill was struck by a train at Wondabyne Station, possibly after being pushed into the train’s path. The train driver gave us a description of the man responsible that matches with that of the man who knocked Lexi in the water while trying to escape the scene.
